TAFE/Vocational school
TAFE / Vocational school in Australia
Australian Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutes are government-owned providers of Vocational Education and Training(VET) courses. International students attend TAFE institutes to complete courses that range from certificate to postgraduate level. Australia’s vocational education and training(VET) institutions offer the opportunity to improve your skills in real and simulated work environments. These two types of schools allow students to gain the practical expertise in workspace which would be a genuine advantage over other graduates.

Other courses
While TAFE institutes are traditionally known for their focus on vocational education, in recent years many have also started offering higher education programs such as bachelor degrees. TAFE institutes also offer English language courses.
How is TAFE/VET different to university?
01. Practical courses
While university courses are more academic and theory-focused, TAFE courses emphasise practical, hands-on training for the workplace. Students use industry-standard facilities such as workshops, kitchens, and training restaurants open to the public. Many courses are designed with industry input and include work placements or on-the-job training.
02. Wide range of courses
TAFE institutes are best known for offering VET qualifications such as Certificates and Diplomas across many industries. Some TAFE institutes also offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as English language programs and secondary school pathways, giving students flexible study options.
03. Accessibility
TAFE institutes generally have lower and more flexible entry requirements than universities. Because TAFE focuses on vocational qualifications, it is an accessible option for many students and is often used as a pathway into university while gaining practical skills and recognised qualifications.
Benefits of TAFE/VET and vocational schools
01. Higher education pathways
TAFE qualifications at the Certificate IV, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma level can provide clear pathways into higher education. Many students are able to gain credit towards a related bachelor degree, reducing overall study time. Credit arrangements vary by institution and course, so it is important to confirm details in advance. TAFE is also increasingly chosen by university graduates who want to gain practical, job-ready skills.
02. Affordable tuition costs
TAFE courses are generally more affordable than university degrees, making them an attractive option for international students. Tuition fees vary depending on the course level, institution, and location, with higher-level vocational and degree programs usually costing more. Students should always check the most up-to-date fees directly with their chosen provider.
03. Flexible entry requirements
Entry into VET courses is usually based on completion of Australian Year 10, 11, or 12, depending on the course level. Some programs may require prerequisite subjects, work experience, or a portfolio, particularly in creative fields. Entry requirements, English language levels, fees, and start dates can differ by provider, so students should confirm details before applying.
