New Zealand SMC update! Effective August 2026

Hello from SOL Edu & Migration!
The New Zealand Immigration Office has recently announced changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC). These updates make it much easier for international students who complete a Master’s degree in New Zealand to qualify for residency.
What is the SMC (Skilled Migrant Category)?
The SMC allows skilled workers or those with a job offer in New Zealand to apply for a Resident Visa based on points. Points are awarded for factors such as qualifications, New Zealand work experience, and salary. Currently, a minimum of 6 points is required to apply for residency.
What changes from August 2026?
The biggest change is that New Zealand Master’s graduates will automatically receive 6 points. This means students can meet the minimum requirement without completing a year of New Zealand work experience. The table below summarizes the changes:

Who benefits the most?
📌Students planning to study or currently studying a Master’s in New Zealand
📌 Those who wanted to shorten the time needed to gain work experience after graduation
📌 Students seeking a faster pathway to residency
Why is a New Zealand Master’s degree now even more attractive?
1. Residency points achieved through the degree alone
- Previously, one year of New Zealand experience was required after a master’s degree. Now, completing a New Zealand Master’s degree alone grants 6 points.
2. Save time and money
-
The need to find work and gain experience for a year after graduation is reduced, shortening the time to residency by at least one year.
3. Adapt locally and expand career opportunities
- Internships and industry collaborations during the Master’s program can lead to skilled employment immediately after graduation.
4. Streamlined immigration strategy
- Study → Work → Residence becomes a clear, one-stop pathway.
If you are currently considering only a Bachelor’s degree, pursuing a Master’s in New Zealand can significantly boost your immigration points. Since a job or job offer from an accredited employer is required for residency, strategic career planning alongside study is highly recommended.
This SMC update aligns with the New Zealand government’s goal of strengthening the study-to-residence pathway. With a Master’s degree now granting residency points on its own, studying in New Zealand is more than just earning a degree, it’s a life-changing opportunity.
