About the school

The University of Canterbury is located in Christchurch, the largest city in New Zealand’s South Island. Christchurch, often called the “Garden City,” is well-developed with an international airport, bus networks, and a mild climate year-round. The city blends traditional British-style architecture with modern buildings and offers extensive botanical gardens and parks. Despite the damage from the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, the city has largely recovered, and life in Christchurch remains vibrant and student-friendly.

The university’s campus is in the Ilam area, about 10 minutes from the city center. Spanning 76 hectares, it features modern lecture facilities, four libraries, 24-hour computer labs, sports facilities, and beautiful gardens, offering an ideal study environment.

University of Canterbury has five main faculties offering over 80 majors from undergraduate to doctoral levels:

  • College of Arts

  • College of Business and Law

  • College of Engineering

  • College of Science

  • College of Education, Health and Human Development
