The University of Otago, established in 1869, is New Zealand’s oldest university, renowned for its history and tradition. The main campus is located in Dunedin, the second largest city in the South Island. Dunedin has a vibrant student population, offering a youthful and dynamic atmosphere within a city rich in tradition.

The campus is close to the city center, with on-campus and nearby student accommodations fostering a lively university environment. The university features beautiful Gothic-style buildings that reflect its long-standing heritage and Scottish-influenced architecture. Otago operates a total of 10 libraries, seven of which are in Dunedin, including specialized libraries for medicine, dentistry, and other fields to support academic study.

Otago has four faculties: Business School, Division of Health Sciences, Division of Humanities, and Division of Sciences, offering a wide range of programs from certificates and bachelor’s degrees to master’s and doctoral degrees.

Why choose Otago

  • Otago is the only university in New Zealand with a School of Dentistry and also operates the country’s oldest medical school, making it a leading institution for health sciences.

  • Admission to Dentistry, Medicine, and Pharmacy requires entry into the Health Science First Year, completion of seven core subjects, and academic performance determining progression to the professional programs.

  • The university also offers diverse health-related programs such as Dental Technology, Radiation Therapy, Physiotherapy, and other allied health fields.

  • Otago combines a long-standing tradition with a culture of innovation. In 1893, it admitted Ethel Benjamin to its law program, New Zealand’s first female law student, shortly before women gained the right to vote, reflecting its progressive spirit.

  • Otago is a member of the Matariki Network of Universities (MNU), collaborating with prestigious institutions worldwide such as Durham University (UK), Dartmouth College (USA), and University of Tübingen (Germany). This enables student and staff exchanges, research collaborations, conferences, and cultural and sporting activities.
