An Enrolled Nurse (EN) works under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) to provide essential nursing care to patients. This role is also commonly referred to as a Nursing Assistant.As of April 11, 2023, the Enrolled Nurse (EN) position has been newly added to New Zealand’s Green List Occupations. Furthermore, ENs are classified under Tier 1, meaning that once you secure employment and are recognized in this profession, you become immediately eligible to apply for a resident visa. Due to this pathway, it is highly sought after and considered one of the best options for those planning to study abroad and immigrate to New Zealand.
Obtaining Permanent Residency via the Enrolled Nurse (EN) Pathway
- Registered under the Green List Occupation Tier 1.
- Lower English language requirement for program entry compared to RNs (IELTS 6.5).
- Shorter study period (1.5 years) compared to a Bachelor’s degree for RNs (3 years).
- Eligible to apply for a resident visa immediately upon securing a job after the 18-month program.
- More affordable tuition options available (Te Pūkenga).

Q I heard that a Post-Study Work Visa is not granted for this course. Will it be difficult to find a job?
Since a Post-Study Work Visa is not issued, you must secure employment and transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) before your student visa expires. However, due to severe staff shortages in this field compared to other industries, current students generally have no major difficulties finding employment. In addition to hospitals, registered ENs are in high demand across various sectors, including aged care and disability support facilities.
Q Roughly how long does it take from applying for permanent residency to getting it approved after securing a job?
When applying under the Green List Tier 1 ‘Straight to Residence’ category, the current processing time for approval is approximately 1 week to 1 month. (As of June 2024)
