Food technology focuses on the application of food science. This program prepares you to work as a food technologist, where you will develop innovative food products and analyze food components. It also serves as a pathway to becoming a food safety officer responsible for auditing food manufacturing businesses.Food technologists are highly sought after as the profession is listed under Tier 1 of New Zealand’s Green List, offering a direct pathway to residency (Straight to Residence visa).

Career Prospects After Graduation
According to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), the number of food technologists is projected to increase by around 4% annually up to 2018 due to rising demand in the food industry. However, the supply of skilled and qualified food technologists remains insufficient to meet this demand.Consequently, the inclusion of food technologists on New Zealand’s Long-Term Skill Shortage List reflects the government’s active encouragement of skilled overseas food technologists to work in New Zealand. Demand is particularly strong for food technologists with 3 to 7 years of industry experience.
