NZTC was established in 1982 by the KinderCare Learning Centre, which operates childcare facilities nationwide, to address the chronic shortage of qualified early childhood educators in New Zealand. For first-year students, the campus-based program offers the option of attending 20 hours of theory classes per week. Those choosing the field-based learning pathway will balance 4 to 8 hours of on-campus theory classes per week with practical training at an approved early childhood center.Despite having a significantly higher proportion of domestic students compared to other private institutions, NZTC runs a dedicated international support team to provide comprehensive academic assistance. While the programs are rigorous—featuring assignment- and practicum-based assessments instead of traditional exams—the college boasts an exceptionally high graduation rate.
