Dentistry is the study of the methods and techniques used to protect human health and to treat and prevent disease and injury, and entry to dental school requires a very high level of academic ability and aptitude. Of New Zealand’s eight universities, dentistry is offered only at the University of Otago. The number of international students who can be admitted to dentistry each year varies depending on the number of local applicants, so it is best to check with the university.

Career opportunities
Graduates of the dental school can register with the Dental Council of New Zealand as soon as they graduate. Once registered as a dentist, you can work in a hospital or run your own practice. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study to pursue academic or research careers, while others gain experience and earn a postgraduate clinical qualification to enter a specialist field.
