Medicine in New Zealand is offered at the University of Otago and the University of Auckland. At both universities, students enter a first-year science programme before applying to medical school in Year 2, with admission based on first-year grades, an interview, and additional tests such as UMAT (Otago). Auckland also offers Graduate Entry, allowing students with a relevant bachelor’s degree from another university or country to enter medical school directly. The standard pathway takes 6 years in total, while Graduate Entry takes 5 years.

Career opportunities
After completing the 5–6 year medical programme, graduates can gain provisional registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. The first 2 years are spent as a House Officer, the most junior doctor role. Full registration follows after completing this period. Training as a specialist doctor requires a further 4+ years, depending on the specialty.
