Podiatry

A Bachelor of Health Science (Podiatry)

Podiatry may be unfamiliar in Korea, but developed countries such as the United States and Europe already offer podiatry programmes within their medical schools and have professional licensing systems, making it a growing specialty in healthcare. Through the programme, students study biomechanics, elderly foot care, diabetic foot care and sports-related conditions (as ankle and foot injuries are common during exercise). They also learn to treat foot conditions and make custom insoles for foot correction, as well as perform procedures such as corn removal and ingrown toenail surgery, in addition to making orthotic devices.

Career opportunities

About 30 podiatrists graduate in New Zealand each year, and around 25% of graduates typically go on to work overseas. Because Australia, the UK and Singapore recognise the same qualification, many graduates take up roles in higher-paying English-speaking countries. With the ageing population and the number of people with diabetes continuing to grow, demand for podiatrists in New Zealand is also rising. Final-year students often apply to the places where they did their clinical placements.
